Cruachan Ai Heritage Centre

Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre
.................................................................................................................................................

Cruachan was the pre-historic capital of Connacht and is reputedly the largest
and best preserved Celtic Royal Site in Europe. It was a centre of ritual
ceremony, inauguration of Kings and legendary home of Queen Medb, earth
goddess and Warrior Queen. The mythical entrance into the “otherworld” is
through the Cave of Cruachan otherwise known as Oweynagat (Cave of the Cats).
An amazing array of archaeological remains are located within a four mile radius
of Tulsk village, dating from the Stone Age to the historic period and these are
interpreted in bright, modern exhibition rooms. The central focus is
Rathcroghan Mound, now established as a ceremonial centre associated with
pre-christian ritual. Many of the sites date from the Bronze Age through the Iron
Age and up until the late Medieval period. It was from Rathcroghan that the
legendary Queen Medb launched the famed cattle raid of Cooley as recounted
in “Táin Bó Cuailnge”. Archaeologists from the Discovery Programme are
excavating the site of Tulsk Fort during the summer months. Visitors are
welcome to visit the site adjacent to the Heritage centre.
