Lissadell House and Gardens

.................................................................................................................................................

Lissadell is famous as the childhood home of Constance Markievicz, one of the leaders of the 1916 rising: the first woman to be elected to Dail Éireann, where she served as Minister for Labour, and also the first woman to be elected to Westminster Parliament in London. Her brother Josslyn created at Lissadell one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe. Sligo born poet W.B. Yeats was friendly with the Gore Booths, and has immortalised Lissadell in his poetry. Writing about Lissadell 37 years ago, the BBC's Anne Robinson observed that 'the garden is overgrown' the greenhouses are shattered and empty, the stables beyond repair and the roof of the main block leaks badly." An intensive programme of restoration has taken place in the House, Gardens and stable blocks since 2004, and today we invite you to enjoy the magic that is Lissadell restored.
