Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland

Queen's University Belfast
.................................................................................................................................................

Queen’s University Belfast was established in 1845 by Queen Victoria as one of
three Colleges of Ireland, the others being at Cork and Galway. The Lanyon
designed main building in the Tudor Gothic style is one of the iconic buildings of
Belfast’s skyline, and the finest Victorian architectural set-piece in the Province.
It extends north and south surrounding a quiet, atmospheric quadrangle. The
Great Hall opened in 1849, however was not seen in its intended finished glory
until being fully restored using the original plans and opening to the public in
2001. Queen’s is famous for its graduates such as Mary McAleese President of
Ireland, and Nobel Prize winners poet Seamus Heaney and Northern Ireland’s
First Minister David Trimble. The Lanyon is home to the Visitor Centre and Gift
Shop, The Naughton Gallery, and the Canada Room from where Senator George
Mitchell laid the foundations for the Northern Ireland peace process.
