The oldest county museum in Ireland is set in Armagh's beautiful Georgian tree lined Mall. Its collections capture centuries of stories relating to the people who lived, worked and had connections with this famous city and historic county.

Geneaology Services

Croke Park Conference facilities

The Armagh County Museum provides geneaology services also, the museum staff will help you to undertake a local history and family research project. The library is a valuable resource for all researchers and includes the TGF Paterson Manuscript Collection, detailing the history of over 280 local families. Other sources include the Munster rolls of 1630; the Hearth Money Rolls of 1664; the Depostions of 1641 relating to Armagh; the Records of Archbishop's Rental 1615-1746 and the Poll Book of 1735 to name but a few. Maps, photographs, drawings and a good local history library are also available.

History

Armagh County Museum was built as a schoolhouse in 1833 and is a fine example of Armagh's architectural heritage. The museum is a treasure trove of exhibits including prehistoric artifacts, household items from bygone days, local history displays, old photos and paintings from some well-known artists. The most famous painting here is The Old Callan Bridge (1941), executed by one of Ulster's finest artists, John Luke. The museum also houses works by the famous Irish poet and painter George Russell (A.E.).
