Fethard, Co.Tipperary is a charming medieval walled town situated in the heart of the Golden Vale along Ireland’s Ancient East. Filled with historic sites, ancient ruins, picturesque riverside walkways, beautiful eateries and local pubs with lots of character, you’ll wonder why you haven’t visited Fethard before!

Fethard is home to the world-famous Coolmore Stud, Mouse Morris Racing and many more stables. You will see a beautiful town set against a backdrop of horse-filled fields with the mountain of Slievenamon keeping watch in the distance. It’s a place for all ages to enjoy!

The Fethard Horse Country Experience, is a new attraction, and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the rich culture, heritage and history of the region. This interactive experience examines the relationship between the people, the land and the horse, revealing how they are all inextricably linked. The interactive nature of the exhibition makes it an enjoyable and informative experience for all ages.


Highlights include:
  • Fethard Town: The medieval walled town features riverside & medieval wall walkway, quaint cafes, an award-winning community playground, traditional pubs, eclectic shops, and welcoming b&b’s and country houses.
  • Fethard Horse Country Experience: Tipperary’s newest visitor attraction - a state-of-the-art interactive exhibition depicting the story of the horse and its role in Irish culture, alongside the archaeology of the Golden Vale and medieval history of Fethard.
  • Holy Trinity Church of Ireland (13th century): One of the largest and finest medieval parish churches in Ireland and home to the oldest timber roof in Ireland.
  • Augustinian Abbey (14th century): A beautiful Harry Clarke stained-glass window can also be seen from inside the church.
  • North Gate: the only surviving gate in the Town Wall and dates back to the15th century. 
  • Sheela na Gig: 3 Sheela na Gig’s are located in Fethard and its environs.

There are plenty of eateries nearby, including Dooks Fine Foods, awarded best newcomer at the Irish Restaurant Awards 2017; Emily’s Deli & Tearooms – a specialist food shop offering a wide range of fine fresh foods and home baked products; McCarthy’s Bar & Restaurant features in the Lonely Planet Guide as deserving national acclaim, as it proclaims itself to be a pub, restaurant and an undertaker (“we’ll wine you, dine you and bury you!”). 

PICNICS
Take a picnic by the Clashawley River and take in the scenic views of the medieval walls, Holy Trinity Church and Slievenamon in the distance.

SHOPPING
Plenty of shopping options nearby, 'Town and County' offers a wide range of delectable interiors, bespoke furniture, gifts and accessories sourced in Europe and beyond. Doirin Saurus is pottery studio based in Crampscastle, Fethard, less than 1km outside the town. Fethard Country Market takes place every Friday morning from 08.00hrs in The Tholsel, Main Street. Cashel Farmhouse Cheesemakers, the producers of world renowned Cashel Blue Cheese, is situated in Beechmount Farm, Fethard. Visitors are welcome on most Mondays and Tuesdays 10.00 to 16.00, but essential to phone before visiting (closed Bank Holiday Mondays). 

A DAY IN THE TOWN
During your day in the town, breaking for lunch, visit the Fethard Horse Country Experience; Holy Trinity Church of Ireland (13th century); the Augustinian Abbey (14th century); Abymill Theatre; Fethard Medieval Town Walls; Fethard Community Playground and Fethard Folk Farm and Transport Museum.

WALKING AND CYCLING
You can enjoy a self-guided walk around the medieval town of Fethard (a map is available from Fethard Horse Country Experience) or book a guided 'Backs to the Wall' tour of the town with Terry Cunningham, phone 086 390 5373. Or, you can take one of the hiking paths to nearby Slievenamon. There are also cycling routes available nearby. 

DRIVING ROUTES
Fethard is on the Cashel to Kilkenny Scenic Drive Route, and Fethard to Slievenamon is also a wonderful drive.

FESTIVALS
Festivals include the Fethard Summer Festival (June) and the Fethard Medieval Festival (August).

Map Location

Located in the heart of the Golden Vale, the medieval walled town of Fethard is only 15 km from The Rock of Cashel and a 15 minute drive from Exit 8, Cashel / Fethard, on the M8 Motorway.  It is easily accessed from Cahir, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir along The Butler Trail. It is approximately one hour and 15 minutes from Cork and two hours from Dublin.
