Day 1
Letterkenny or (London)Derry on either side of Lough Foyle are ideal bases for exploring Ireland’s lovely northwest region. Take a full day tour of Donegal and Sligo, first visiting the Donegal County Museum in Letterkenny. The Museum’s first floor exhibition charts the history of Donegal from Stone Age to the 20th Century.Next explore the gentle beauties of Sligo, visit gracious Lissadell House, celebrated in the writings of Sligo’s great poet W.B.Yeats. On the return route slip across the border at Ballyshannon for a worthwhile visit to one of Ireland’s leading attractions the Belleek Pottery Visitor Centre. Then return to Letterkenny or Derry via the scenic Barnesmore Gap route.
Day 2
First visit of the day to the Tower Museum to learn the history of Derry and an Armada shipwreck. Then also in Derry take a fascinating view of marine life at the Riverwatch Aquarium and Visitor Centre. Then Southwards to explore the heritage treasures of Tyrone and Fermanagh’s lovely lakeland area. Spend the afternoon in and around Enniskillen on lovely Lough Erne to visit firstly Enniskillen Castle Museums, dating back to the 15th Century. Also visit the elegant 18th Century former home of the Earls of Enniskillen, Florence Court and the nearby underworld wonders of the Marble Arch European Geopark, one of Europe’s finest showcaves with a natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers.
Today’s touring can end with a return journey to Derry or drive cross country via Dungannon and Portadown to Belfast and follow some more heritage trails from the vantage point of Northern Ireland’s capital city.
