Day 1

Limerick is a fine Georgian city and ideal for exploring the Shannon region. Within the city lies King John’s Castle built circa 1200, with fine ramparts and interesting archeological and historical exhibitions. Also visit the nearby Hunt Museum, housing a great private collection of art and antiquity. Next drive to Adare, Ireland’s most picturesque village, and interesting Adare Heritage Centre and on to visit the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, recalling the wartime era of the flying boats.

Day 2

Explore Co. Clare ‘Land of Castles’, tracing its earliest celtic civilisation at Craggaunowen, the Living Past, then to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, restored 15th Century Castle surrounded by Folk Park of thatched dwellings and 18th Century village street. Drive to the lovely coast of Clare via busy market town of Ennis and visit ‘Riches of Clare’ exhibition at the Clare Museum. For those who may wish to find a short cut to Co. Kerry and pick up some of the Cork-Kerry visits, there is a ferry crossing across the Shannon Estuary from Tarbert near tranquil Kilrush Heritage Town. Otherwise from Ennis take the route to seaside golfing resort of Lahinch and visit the spectacular Cliffs of Moher Experience.

Day 3

Today’s suggested route takes in the lovely region around Lough Derg, the largest lake on the River Shannon. A full afternoon is worth devoting to Birr Heritage Town, some miles east of Lough Derg. Birr Castle Demesne contains not only the Castle and its award winning Gardens but Ireland’s Historic Science Centre and the famous Great Telescope. Return to Limerick via Roscrea Heritage Town with St. Cronan’s monastic ruins and restored 13th Century Castle to
explore within this busy market town.

Day 4

Day tour of Ireland’s Golden Vale to Cashel, ancient capital of Munster, via Kilmallock Walled Town, whose remains date back to the 13th Century, and the busy market town of Mallow, and Cahir with its fine medieval Castle. Time to stroll and explore Cashel Heritage Town, dominated by the famous Rock of Cashel, visit the Bru Boru Cultural Centre at the foot of the Rock, dedicated to the celebration of Irish music, song and dance.
