In its most romantic interpretation, Enniskillen derives its name from a translation of the Irish ‘Inis Ceithlean’ meaning ‘Island of Kathleen’.
The town was established beside Enniskillen Castle, built some 600 years ago by the Gaelic Maguires. The site now houses Fermanagh County Museum and The Inniskillings Museum, which are known jointly as Enniskillen Castle Museums.
During the town’s early expansion, bridges were constructed across the east and west fords onto the island, the church was set on the highest point, the Diamond and Market place on the next highest point of the island.
Present day amenities include the Enniskillen Town walk, accommodations, restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, galleries, ample car and coach parking, a children's playground and leisure centre.
Enniskillen Castle Museums have undergone major redevelopment, completed in 2016.
Major new galleries also opened in 2016, interpreting the county's rich history as the Kingdom of Lough Erne, with its crannogs, castles and early Christian stone sculptures. Imaginative displays will celebrate local craftmanship from Belleek Pottery, to the Full-Circle Art Gallery and the rural traditions of the Fermanagh hearth. There will be a changing programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year for everyone to enjoy.
