Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum recalls the 1940s when Foynes was the fulcrum point for air traffic between the USA & Europe.

The role played by Foynes in the establishment of passenger flights across the Atlantic is excitingly captured in the Museum which is located in the original Airport Terminal Building. Foynes was the first International Airport in Ireland and operated right through the 2nd World War. The famous flying boats were frequent visitors carrying a diverse range of passengers including military personnel, celebrities and refugees.

The story is told by way of original film in a 1940’s style cinema (available in 8 different languages), showcases on the war years, airline memorabilia and numerous exhibits detailing the glamorous and romantic era of the flying boats.

Visitors have the chance to board the world’s only life size replica of the Boeing 314 Flying Boat and experience what it was like to fly in such luxurious surroundings.

Foynes and the flying boats will be forever connected with the invention of Irish Coffee - a uniquely Irish treat. In 1943, Chef Joe Sheridan spent months perfecting one of the world’s most famous tipples after serving today’s original Irish Coffee to some weary and cold passengers all those years ago. A wonderful 3D hologram re-enacts this historic event in the very building of its creation and you can enjoy an Irish Coffee in a beautiful 1940s setting.

When Hollywood movie star Maureen O'Hara stepped off a flying boat in Foynes with her husband Captain Charles Blair in 1976, it was the beginning of a special relationship. The new Maureen O'Hara exhibition is dedicated to preserving the memory of Ireland's most famous actress and it showcases her personal memorabilia including; the iconic grey tweed jacket from the movie 'The Quiet Man' and an honorary Oscar.

From the top of the recently reinstated Control Tower enjoy a panoramic view of the Shannon Estuary, Foynes Island, Port and Village.

Explore the maritime exhibits and interactive displays depicting life on the River Shannon. The Maritime Museum looks at the commercial and leisure aspects of the estuary and tells many of the myths and stories connected with this historical river.
